It’s almost 1 a.m. I’ve just finished perusing Google. I stumbled across several videos of Alicia Keys performing and interviewing. In each interview I looked at her belly hoping that this “pregnancy” madness was just a fluctuation in her weight. Well, of course, that’s not the case.
Not unlike other Alicia Keys fans, I was crushed. Granted, I’ve never met this woman a day in my life, and had I met her, I still wouldn’t KNOW her, but it’s seems that everything she portrayed and everything she stood for… was a lie. Like Mashonda (Swizzy’s scorned ex-wife) said, this isn’t the woman who caused us to sing and unite and LOVE. It can’t be. “A Woman’s Worth,” “Superwoman,” and her many other musical pieces on what it means to be a “woman,” “respected,” “honored,” hell, “UNITED…” Impossible. This can’t be the same woman.
Since the moment this image-smearing scandal arose, I’ve been looking for justification for the well-to-do singer. Sadly, I’ve found none. What I have discovered, is that there is a lesson to be learned by watching Alicia Keys.
-Lessons from Alicia-
1. Negativity stands out more than positivity.
Trust me, my stomach cuts back flips as I search for a silver lining. I’d much rather join the bandwagon of all the other blogs that are bashing Alicia and Swizz, but that would be too easy. And quite frankly, it’s been done to death. They cheated, they’re pregnant. It is, what it is.
This is the same woman who hosted a free concert over the web so that people, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to see her perform, could. Also the same sultry songbird that inspired us with her music and is the walking voice of the Keep A Child Alive Foundation.
This “Homewrecker-Pregnancy Mei Lai” sucks. Yes, she seems trifling by her lack of remorse, her excitement over her baby AND relationship, and the mere fact that she hasn’t publicly addressed the cheating “allegations” make for a terrible mix, but her focus and her works don’t change.
A woman who’s been in the music business 10 years is being torn apart by her first piece of bad publicity. We built the pedestal and now we’re ripping it from under her.
-Lesson II-
2. Life Goes On
Literally and figuratively. As I read the angry and loving duels about Alicia Keys being pregnant, engaged to Swizz Beats, being a home wrecker and on the converse, a great person, philanthropist and more, it hit me…life goes on.
It’s almost as if we want Alicia to crawl under a rock and die because she cheated with this man. Should she halt her tour, hang up her career, abort her baby, all to right her wrongs? No. The fact of the matter is, her baby won’t stop growing, her life and ours won’t end because of what has happened. Life goes on. I commend Alicia Keys for moving forward with her life, flaws and all.
Food for thought:
For Alicia: be the change. Be what your music embodies, don’t be an image, don’t portray something you’re not, and by all means don’t think that love makes everything “ok.” Morals are still important, boo. In the end, you know right from wrong, love doesn’t cover up the “facts.”
For those of us who watch people live out loud…they’re human. They make good and bad choices just like we do, the only difference is, more people know about their **ck ups than ours.
Til next time, keep loving, keep laughing, and keep living.
